I had Friday off work and Steffie took the day off as well because we had something important to do. I had been waiting for this day since December because I was finally going to get some laps around the Hockenheimring in a Porsche! We drove the 20kms south to Hockenheim nice and early and we had pretty good weather. The summer has really hit us and we have had plenty of clear sky days.
We drove in through the paddock entrance around into the middle of the circuit where the parking lot was mostly empty. The track was being used by a few car clubs as a race day and one of these car clubs had the Porsche GT3 which was the lap car. They also had an Audi R8 plus there were plenty of other cars around including Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, a Dodge Viper and a go-kart thing called a KTM X-Bow which looked like a lot of fun
We sat up in the grandstand at the Sachskurv and watched a session as the cars went around for about 15 minutes before heading back down. The sun was really shining, but I had to put on a balaklava and helmet because bending like a pretzel to get into the car. Once I was seated comfortably, the moved the seat right forward and tightened the 5 point racing harness just to make sure there was no escape. As the passenger all I had to do was hang on!
We went out on the circuit and there was a lot of traffic. What really struck me wasn't the acceleration, but the handling and braking. The thing could go from 180kph to 80kph in 300m and really squeezed you into your harness before cornering up to 120kph. I was sitting so low in the car that you could feel the breaks tightening and the tyres slipping and gripping around the corner. It was pretty cool.
After a short 3 laps, it was time to come back in and I was sweating rivers. I don't know because if it was because it was so hot in the car or because the adrenaline was pumping, but I was soaking wet! I wouldn't like to do 50 laps around on a hot day like that, you would just be finished! There was the option of getting a video for another 40€, but there are enough lap videos on Youtube and I'm not the screaming type!
We drove back home and the kiddy pool was set up on the terrace so we put it to good use and had a few cocktails. Not a bad way to round things off...
