Howdy folks,

It has been an interesting weather week with temperatures hitting the mid 30s for 3 days straight! The locals didn't know what to do with themselves after so much rain and flooding. On the evening of the 3rd day, a huge storm swept through and cooled things off a bit. The temperature was just shy of 35 degrees so it wasn't technically a heatwave, but it sure felt like it. Since then we're back to low 20s.

I had Tuesday free and despite the heat, I rode into Heidelberg to meet Lin and walk up the Philosopher's Way to the Heiligenberg. There was a definite heat haze over the city and we saw a deer on our way up. That wasn't the last animal I saw this week as a fox ran across the road between the fields when I was riding home. Who says Germany doesn't have wildlife!

The warmer weather has really got people into the garden. In Edingen, people don't really have a backyard, so a lot of people have a separate plot in the community gardens which has about two dozen individually owned gardens. The strawberries were ripe for the picking this week, so we have been feasting on them.

On Friday night, Steffie and I decided to drive up to the Königstuhl to take a look at the night sky. It was really beautiful: as the sunlight faded the sky gradually darkened and the city lights filled the darkness. I had to work Saturday as well so by Saturday night, I was ready to unwind. The two Steffie's lined up some cocktails with a few movies which really hit the spot.

Sunday was spent playing football with Christian and Basti. After lunch the whole family piled into the car and took a drive into the Odenwald to the Weisser Stein; a restaurant near a TV tower. We drove up through Schriesheim into the forest and then had about 30 minutes to walk along the hilltop to the restaurant. There is also a lookout tower there built a century ago by the local hiking club. I was keen to have a big more of a look around, while they dined on icecream, Black Forest cake and coffee.

This week should be a bit easier with cooler temperatures and my evenings free! Now that the summer is officially here, I guess we should start doing some proper travelling!
