Howdy folks,

Well after a night of mexican food and hot spas in Fresno, we set out for Death Valley via Bakersfield where we went to our first Walmart which is basically a supermarket and department store in a giant Bunnings Store size building. It always amazes me that in the middle of a country town, I can find South Australian wine at half the price it would have cost me to walk around to the bottle shop at home! After stocking up on munchies, we headed into Death Valley.

Now I've been sporting the sniffles for a few days and as we left Fresno I had a cold coming on so I wasn't feeling the most energetic. We headed over the Sierra Nevada ranges through snow back down into the desert. Death Valley is located between to large snow peaked mountain ranges which is why it is one of the lowest, hottest and driest places on earth. Our first stop was Marble Canyon where we scrambled up a dry river bed up into the mountains. It was at this point that I made a stupid decision and ended up busting my right hand on one of the rocks I used to break my fall. It bled pretty well and looked a bit nasty, but so far it isn't hurting and I got it cleaned up.

We camped for the next 2 nights in the valley with bonfires, marshmallows and campfire cooking. We had to cover up the food at night because of the coyotes that come out at night but the stargazing was just amazing. The second day we went for a hike through Golden Canyon which comes out to this huge salt flat in the bottom of the valley. We then drove to Badwater which is officially the lowest point in North America and a huge saltflat which is 86m below sea level. We had fun taking pictures with perspective and headed back to camp for lunch and then a scramble through the sand dunes. That night we had a dip in the pool and relaxed by the fire.

I love Death Valley! Did you enjoy it? It's so freaky out there and the people that work at the hotel in the middle are even freakier.
