After a few days on Kho Phi Phi Island rotating between the pool, the massage table and bed, we stopped briefly in Bangkok before leaving for Myanmar early Sunday morning. This is Daniel's first time here and I haven't been since 1985, and so everything has changed, except the smells and the humidity, which instantly bring back my trip here as a 6 year old. We quickly discovered our hotel is in the middle of Patpong, the infamous red light district, as we hunted for somewhere to eat last night. We opted for seafood instead of ping-pong shows and enjoyed fried crab with garlic and black pepper. Certainly one of our best meals so far.
We woke up this morning and took the Skytrain (which is celebrating its 10th anniversary) up to the weekend market, which was hot, crowded and more reminiscent of Istanbul's grand bazaar than the street fruit and vegetable market we were hoping for - you can get ANYTHING there. We saw hedgehogs and trained squirrels in the pets section and Daniel did find some good carnivourous plants on offer. We also sourced some delicious custard apples and mangosteens!
A trip to a massive mall, reminiscent of Dubai, for a quick lunch (and air-conditioned reprieve), then on to Wat Pho, home of the famous reclining buddha and lots of Thai glitz. Understated it is not... Finally, a waterbus - Bangkok's answer to the vaporetto we were on ten days ago - back to Patpong, with great views of Wat Arun across the river. By the time we got back to our hotel, we were ready for a cooling swim before a wonderful dinner out at an excellent Thai restaurant called Face with Daniel's friends from Ghana, Natalie and Jonathan, who have been living in Bangkok for the last several years. Natalie was just back from a modelling shoot in Myanmar and was very envious of our upcoming travels!
