Having spent a significant amount of time on the beach here in Santa Teresa in the past week, I feel in a comfortable position to offer some handy tips for any of you potential future beachgoers. Its a difficult undertaking, but my research has been thorough in the area of ultimate relaxation and lazy naps. Hope this perks up the interest of everyone at home whose burried in snow. Iīm sending sunny thoughts your way!
Tip number 1) Bring a thermos. There is nothing less appealing than a baking hot beverage. The coolers that they sell in grocery stores down here are just big styrofoam boxes. They are inconvenient and bulky, not to mention environmentally unsustainable! Fill up your bottle, (Thermos brand is the only one I can vouch for personally), with water or your beach bevie chois du jour - lately ours has been smirnoff ice - and it stays cold for like 8 hours! It perfectly facilitates day drinking, i mean... hydrating.
2) Bring a lufa. Not to the actual beach obviously... people will steal anything here. Its for the shower afterwards. I didnīt even think about it, because I never use one at home, but the sand is so sticky here. I get out of the shower and still have shell freckles all over me! I would kill for a scrubbing aid.
3) Donīt waste your time with a towel. A beach sarong with a cheesy motif works best. Iīm currently rocking a red one with an Imperial logo ("la cervesa de Costa Rica!") and Jo has an equally fantastic and obnoxious Bob Marley one.
4) Donīt skimp on the tunes. Even if it means shackling your portable speakers to your leg while you nap, its worth it. Nothing makes friends faster.
5) And last but not least, (or in my case, my personal cardinal rule), donīt forget snacks. Thereīs nothing worse than getting settled at the perfect tanning angle and then realizing that youīre starving for some fresh pineapple and corn nuts. They donīt sell anything on the beach here either, so it can quickly become situation critical.
Hope youīre all craving a beach day now (especially those ones who will be joining me down here shortly)! lots of love!
