So today we hired our Pontiac and headed west out of San Francisco. The driving was fairly easy to start with as I was able to just follow the endless stream of cars in front of me. Hitting the coast, we turned south down highway 1 and was soon out of the city. We stopped off at Half Moon Bay to have our first Macdonalds experience and we soon found out that a 'regular' is the same as a large in Aus. Haven't braved an American large meal yet!! We also stopped for fuel here (about 68c a litre) and this is when I experienced my first hairy moment driving on the wrong side of the road. I pulled out across traffic without looking in the other direction. Luckily there was no one coming and we were spared to crash another day!
As we headed south, we noticed the scenery changing, with the hills getting higher and the cliffs getting steeper.
At about midday, we entered the region known as the 'big Sur', which can best be described as the US equivalent of the Great Ocean Road. It is aproximately 90 miles of cliffside driving that sticks to the coast the whole way.
We stopped off at many points along the way, half the time for taking photos and the other half the time for resting my foot, which had constantly been braking, accelerating, braking, accelerating for hours on end.
At the other end of the very windy stretch of road, we ended up at a beach where a bunch of elephant seals had just given birth!
We arrived at our hotel at San Simeon around 5 and went to a local grocery store to buy our all american christmas food. This consisted of turkey hotdogs, potato chips, and country fried microwave chicken! To wash it all down, we got a bottle of coke and some fairly horrid tasting Californican chardonnay.
Overall, a great but tiring day, glad to be in bed now!
