One of the few pluses El Paso has going for it is that it's only 10 hours to L.A. That was our destination. My friend Deanne lives there and we wanted to hang out on the beach. But as we neared California, we both mentioned that we were close to San Diego, which is close to Tijuana, which is a city of fame we had never visited. So San Diego it was. We found a pretty cheap motel near the border and walked across the bridge.

I had walked across a bridge to Mexico several hundred times in my life. I wasn't nervous. But Tijuana wasn't exactly like Juarez. The bridge isn't as lively and populated. And there isn't a strip of bars just on the other side. It's a cab ride to the bar district. And Ed and I are frugal. So we just started following a group of thugs wandering into Tijuana. We assumed they were headed to the right place. So we just acted like we knew what we were doing. We did eventually find the bars. Lots of them. We sat on a balcony overlooking the main street and drank like fish. After 4 or 5 hours of that we wandered back toward the bridge. Since I was very drunk I had suddenly become fluent and I spoke at length with a guy at the taco stand and we ate like champs. Somehow we remembered how to get back to the bridge and stumbled across to America and into our hotel. Quite a night.
