We spent a few days checking out Chicago. I had never been there and it's an amazing city. I had no idea what to expect. Downtown is gorgeous, no surprise there. But I didn't realize there were beaches everywhere. Lake Michigan is fantastic. And there are a ton of huge parks in the heart of the city. It's not the urban sprawl I thought it would be.

So after a few days we decided to head out. Our first stop would be Austin. I actually met Ed when we were working at a restaurant in Austin. He grew up in Chicago and had moved back a few years ago. So we thought we'd spend a night bar hopping and seeing a few of our friends.

We drove straight through to Austin in a day. This would define our trip. Lots of long drives. Neither of us had a problem with spending 20 hours in the car and crossing several states. We had gotten a free upgrade on our rental car, so it was pretty comfortable. And we needed some time to catch up. Ed's an interesting guy. I won't say much about him except that he's not like anyone else I know. And he likes to eat whiskey. And he enjoys an altered state of mind. And it's also important to point out that despite these vices, he's brilliant. And depressive. And self-destructive. And hilarious. So there's Ed summed up in three lines - two more lines than he deserves.
