This is one of the several day-trips offered from Bukittinggi, and it's probably the one I most highly recommend. I think we paid $30 or so to have a driver for the day and a guide who spoke English. Our guide was great, the vehicle was nice, and as you can see from the pics, the views were gorgeous. We could have done it on motorbike, but this trip was farther out of town and was on the highway part of the way. I prefer motorbike rides on country roads, and we got rained on a lot too during our time in Bukittinggi. So having the car was nice. They also offer trips to Lake Maninjao and Harau Valley, but we went to both of those places for several days. They can be reached by bus or motorbike too, but private cars were pretty cheap and a lot safer. It's just tough to carry your packs, negotiate traffic, and deal with weather while riding a motorbike.
