Derek set up a trip for my mom's 60th birthday.  Mountains?  nah.  Lakes?  nah.  Small town with cobble-stone streets, antique shopping and funnel cake?  nah.  Vegas baby.  Vegas.

My mom hadn't been to Vegas in 20 years or so.  We thought she should see the city in post-Sinatra and peri-Paris glory.  That, and Derek loves Las Vegas.  And I don't mean he enjoys it and it's a fun place to go every few years.  I mean, if it's a slow Tuesday afternoon and D finds out his Wednesday morning meetings are canceled, he'll grab a flight to Nevada and hit a craps table.  And it's not because he's a compulsive gambler (is it a compulsion if it's the only time you feel truly alive?).  It's because everything about the city suits him.  In Las Vegas, like in no other place in the world, Derek is absolutely and totally in his element.  The restaurants, the clubs, the limos, the beautiful people, the decadence, and yes, the adrenaline injections served in the form of doubling down and letting it ride on hard eights, perfectly accommodate all of Derek's passions and pleasures.  The city belongs to him and he to it.  Derek won't get married in Vegas, but he just might marry Vegas, because it is a city that never ages, never dulls, and always puts out.  Derek's relationship with The City of Sin has been, and will continue to be, a long and torrid love affair.

And a city that can make you feel so alive seemed like the perfect place to celebrate 6 decades of life.  Happy 60th Mom.  Let's go to Vegas.
