Our one big day trip was to see four of the surrounding islands.  It was $15 a piece and wasn't a bad day out.  The first island was probably the worst part of the tour because it's just a coconut plantation that you have to pay extra to visit and you have to do the tour on a tractor around the island.  They don't tell you anything interesting or provide any insight.  It's just a bumpy ride through some trees.  The coolest part was that the island was full of dozens of deer for some reason.  They were small and kind of cute.  We spent more than an hour there and had lunch.

The next three stops were all relatively brief.  The photos of the gorgeous water are of stop 2, and we did some snorkeling there.  But the reef is pretty much dead and we didn't see anything much of interest.  We left there and went to Koh Phi, which is just a tiny piece of rock, maybe 20 meters squared, sticking out of the water.  But since you can't build there, it's the most pristine reef in the area.  We snorkeled for about half and hour and it was fantastic.  It was probably on par with our daytime dive at Koh Phi Phi, if not better.  But it was a short stop because we were running out of time after spending so long on the crappy coconut island.  Our last stop was of a private island we had originally booked our last few nights on, and we didn't even go ashore.  It was cloudy and the island was obviously nothing special.  But it did confirm our decision to stay in our current bungalow.

So for travelers considering the tour, I'd just try to get to Koh Phi to do some snorkeling.  The rest of it kind of sucks.
