One of the must sees near Luang Prabang is the set of falls called Khouang Sy. It's only 30 km from the city center, making it an easy afternoon trip from the city. Tuk-tuks will make the return trip for $2.50, or for a dollar more you can take a mini-van. We chose the latter and were glad we did. We watched several groups of travelers gasping for breath in the clouds of dust kicked up by the traffic on the predominantly dirt road.

From the park gates there is a short path through the forest and up to the falls. Along the way is a tiger living in a small enclosure. It was rescued from the pet trade several years ago. There is also a reserve for small Asiatic Black Bears.

Since it was an afternoon trip, we didn't have much time to explore the falls, but we still had a couple of hours to look around. I was afraid that after Ti Lor Su in Thailand, every other set of falls would seem disappointing. However, I enjoy falls and pools in general, and they all have something unique to offer.
