We went back to Mae Sot to kill a few days before we had to cross into Myanmar and renew our Thai visas. We had planned on visiting a gibbon sanctuary south of the city, but decided it wasn't that important. It's not easy to get there (it would mean another songthaew) and after hanging out with the monkeys in Lopburi, petting injured primates through cages didn't sound all that cool. So we just hung out in the city, enjoyed hot water showers and AC, ate some great food, and read a lot. I read Steppenwolf for the first time and it's brilliant. I highly recommend it. You know how you read certain things and the author makes it sound so easy that you think, "I could write that." This isn't one of those books. Herman Hesse is brilliant (or his translators are). It's not always an easy read, but it's fantastic. So to join the Herman Hesse fan club, write to...
I had a bacon cheeseburger in Mae Sot that changed my life. After Um Phang where we couldn't even get restaurants to feed us, I really enjoyed this place run by a Canadian expat. It was lovely. What else? I ate Oreos and milk until I could hear myself getting fatter.
So our only real purpose in Mae Sot was to make a border run to Burma on the 13th. We just hung out until then.
