We had to catch a flight from Juliaca to Lima. Juliaca is the closest airport to Puno. It's a 45 minute shuttle ride and it gave us our final look at rural Peru.

The flight was a hell of a lot better than any bus ride we took. Of course, my Peruvian travel is cursed and the only two kids on the plane were sitting directly behind me. For those of you who don't know this, I'm not a big fan of children. Particularly those who have the audacity to do things like talk and make noise. These kids did that with a nice, high-pitched, nasally whine. And the little girl behind me kept kicking my seat. So I turned and stared at the mother with a vicious look until she whispered to the children that their lives may be in danger. I did a mental measurement to see if either of them would fit in an overhead compartment. I decided to just try to ignore them.

So we landed in Lima and tried to figure out what to do with our 14 hour layover. Our flight didn't leave until 2:00 tuesday morning. We didn't want to have to hit the ATM again just to take a cab into the city. But Peru has a departure tax of $30 we didn't know about so we had to take out money anyway. So Bev and I decided to head over to Miraflores, which is that posh part of Lima we hung out in for my birthday. We spent the day sitting on the beach, having a drink in a restaurant that had a cover charge, and walking the city streets. Then we had an awesome dinner at a place overlooking the ocean. Bev's treat. It was a great way to spend our final day in Peru. Much better than sitting around the airport.

We made it back to the airport and checked into our flight at 9:30 or so. This was it. Nothing had gone wrong and we were going to make our flight back to the states. With all our earlier transportation woes I wasn't entirely sure things would work out. But, we're charmed people, and everything was fine. We were all set to head back to Texas.
