A day where both Lynne and I were feeling a bit lethargic and as a result we didn't go to Yosemite. Although there was a genuine reason too, we weren't really sure what the situation was there weather wise and we thought it might be crowded because today was President's Day.

I think that in the past there used to be separate public holidays for particular Presidents (on their birthdays) but now these have all been rolled into one day. I'm not sure whether it's like Thanksgiving, with people doing something special to mark the day. To me it feels a bit like Easter Monday back in England, where people can have an extra day to vegetate on their sofas or hit the shops for the numerous sales that get put on. Certainly the shopping comparison stands up, because every single store seems to have a President's Day sale and there are constant adverts on the television to remind you about them too.

We were wondering today whether we've allocated too much of our trip to being in America and are pondering trying to change the date that we fly out of America, so we can get an extra week in Fiji. Each flight change costs us fifty pounds each though and March is monsoon season in Fiji, so we might get an extra week in the pouring rain.

After careful consideration of the trips that are available for us to do in Fiji, we came to the consideration that two weeks is probably just about enough time. There is a 12 day/11 night trip, where we'll get to spend time on five of the smaller islands. Whilst the schedule for the trip looks idyllic, it will mean that we won't really have any time to explore the main island. Still I guess after awhile the tropical blue seas and white sands will all look the same (you can stop those loud raspberry sounds now thank you!).

We didn't manage to secure the special internet rate for an extra night at the Vagabond Inn (despite Lynne trying to blag it!), so it was back to a Motel 6 establishment for us. For the second time on this trip I've been recorded on the hotel computer system as being from Northern Ireland when checking in (the red UK passport seems to confuse people out here when they read it).

The check in clerk was pleasant enough and like all Americans seem far more at ease talking to complete strangers. We particularly enjoyed hearing how much he hated President Bush and how he'd like to detach the state of Texas from the rest of the United States, it seemed somehow appropriate on President's Day!!
