THE FORKS

Our usual trip away for the winter has been delayed this year until the fall of 2012:)

We both have had our CT scans done and all is clear.  A few more tests that also ended up clear!  Yeah.

It really hasn't been all that bad, the weather has been incredible.  A few cold days in December and January, but most days have been above normal for tempertures and there is very little snow.

The days are now longer in February.  Winnipeg is know for lots of sunny winter days.

Our first pictures are of our day outting to the Forks in downtown Winnipeg.  This is where the Assiniboine and Red Rivers join together.  It was originally an area where natives came to meet and trade amongst the tribes and then trading with the explorers during the fur trade years.

Now it is a great place to visit for restaurants, a walking trail around the area, a free stage for entertainment on special days and celebrations.  Lots of shops and buskers in the warmer weather.  A skateboard park in the summer, flower beds and fountains.

In the winter there is an ice rink by the shops and of course the longest skating trail along both of the rivers.  They have also included two outdoor rinks for hockey and a rink for curling.

On our day at the Forks we saw several 'warming huts' being put together.  Each year there is an international design competition for the warming huts and the winners come to Winnipeg and create their deisgns and the huts are then put out along the river trails.  It was interesting.

The Forks has been a meeting place for over 6,000 years. Early Aboriginal peoples traded at The Forks, followed by European fur traders, Métis buffalo hunters, Scottish settlers, riverboat workers, railway pioneers and tens of thousands of immigrants.  To read more go to www.theforks.com
