August 23, Sunday

We are going to see a Polo Match. It takes place way over the other side of the city and Len figures it out we would have to make 4 bus changes.  We got help on the bus where to get off and then a lady at the bus stop made a suggestion to Len so it cut out one of the busses.

Our journey takes us through Wimbledon.  We look to see if we can find the stadium as we go through the town, but no luck in seeing it.  It is a big city, must be somewhere out of the centre.

We get off across from the Fox and Duck pub and walk ahead a bit and down a park road.  We come to the Polo field.  The cars are coming in and parking along the side, then setting up their chairs, blankets and picnics on the grass in between the cars.  It is a sunny warm day, just a bit of a breeze.  On the other side of the field is the club house and stands.

We walk along looking at what people have brought.  We say to them it looks like a great tail gate party here.  I am sure they have no idea what a tail gate is – no pick-up trucks here.  We go to the end and look at the horses and riders.  Then around to the club house - for members and guests only, this must be a small club as the facilities are small.  We had thought there would be more stands and concessions.  No concessions for those who are not members or guests.

We make our way back to the other side and pick out a spot to sit.  The one couple had spoken to us earlier, the other couple were waiting for another car to come and were worried about us taking up their space.  The car arrived and had lots of room.

The polo match begins, it is 4 players on each side, 2 refs, they play 4 seven minute chuckers with 3 minute breaks in between each chucker.  They begin on the other side with the ref throwing out the ball between the horses lined up on each side.

They take turns on each side through out the field throwing out the ball.  The first 2 teams are Dubai and Tchonga.  It is so exciting, especially when someone gets a break away and they all charge at top speed down the field chasing the lead horse and the ball.

When the half time came we got up a put the divots in!  During this time we spoke with the couple on the one side of us.  They then came over and brought us a wine flute of sparking rose wine.  We sat down on our jackets to enjoy the drink and the family on the other side offered us chocolate cake and raspberries for dessert.  It was very good.  When I returned the wine glasses they asked if we would like some sandwiches.  We had stopped for lunch on our way here, so we were still full.

The second game was a team from England and one from Spain.  The third game was between two novice teams.  With the long ride home we left at this point, thanking all the neighbours for their hospitality and began our walk to the bus stop.

We stopped in Wimbledon and went to the Prince Charles Pub for roast beef and Yorkshire pudding diner.  It wasn't too bad, the beef could have been a bit rarer.  We did enjoy it as we haven’t had roast beef for such a long time.

Back on the bus for the remainder of our ride home.

At the hotel there are 2 large groups staying there.  One is a group of workers from Fiji – I think they said.  They spend a lot of time drinking beer and playing pool.  The other group is from India, there is a group of them in our room corner area.  They are up before 6 a.m. and go back and forth from room to room and chat in the hall.  The first morning I went out in my jamies and said please ssshh.  They went into a room and closed the door.  The hotel is very good at filling all your requests.  Someone had flipped the valance up and it was then dusty, they cleaned it right away.  They also put on a sheet on the bottom, but give a blanket for the top cover.  We asked for a sheet and they remade the bed..  The front staff are very helpful with info on getting tickets for the buses and trains.
