It looks like I'll be based in Manila and the first week was a bit brutal. Its loud, noisy, dirty and crowded. It's a city of mega malls, fast foods and impoverished millions.
I'm staying at a decent apartment hotel that has a pool and is a bit of a refuge from all the chaos.
About the work...oh yeah..forgot about that
The philippines is launching a measles immunization campaign between Oct 15 and Nov16. The goal is to immunize the 9 millions kids between 9 month and 48 months. Measles has a high mortality rate and they have had measles outbreaks in various areas due to a growing pool of unimmunized children
My job is to do 'validation' of various regions. I take teams out to do surveys primarly in the slum areas because that's where many kids are missed.I'm assigned to a region with 5 provinces and will be working with Messerat, a physican from Ethiopia. We';ve been out a few times do pre campaign assessments and get along great. Small blessings....oh I should mention that the mormon church is volunteering and now I have to try and recruit them from the various areas I'm working in so they can give me a hand....ironic don't you think????
I've found a little spa down the block called 'Om' and just had the best massage ever. I head out tomorrow for a week to a couple of the other areas. I've arranged for a vehicle so it should be more comfortable than the last trip which was mainly by local transport. This area of the world is poorly funded by WHO.....so much for my dreams of riding around in a WHO car...oh well., small worries when you consider the bigger picture. Speaking of pictures I'm going to try and download a few so you can see what I'm up to.
