Yesterday we arrived in Tacna fter 23 hours on a bus from La Serena, Chile to Arica, Chile, then in collectivo across the border. It was great to rrive and not be traveling in bus for a little bit. This seems to be reasonably pleasant town. Much to my surprise, the most shocking part of the bus ride was not the length of the ride, but the shocking amount of nothing between the two places. La Seren is dry arrea, on you hit dessert pretty much outside the city limits, well not immediateñly, but pretty close. and then there is bleak bleak dry dessert nothing for the next 23 hours. It is true some of the time it was dark, but every visable thing from La Seren to Tacna appers to be dessert. much of it the type of dessert where you cannot see one green item in the sand. Other parts had only fast expnses of dry crcked dirt, which looked like they could have been mud onceupo a time. Overall, after our long long(1573 km) journey yesterdy, I will be looking forwrd to seeing few more living things in the days to come. Thisafternoon e push on the Arrquipa, another 7 hours in the bus, so we{ll see what lndscape that brings.
