Flag of Austria  , Austrian Alps,
Monday, October 19, 2009

After an easy taxi ride to the bus-stop (we decided to splash out after the stressy morning in Cesky...) we rode our bus to the city of Salzburg (as a required stop on the way to Munich), laughing all the way with our very entertaining tourguide (reminded us of 'Pee Wee Herman'), who gave us the standard safety message we hear on every busride, in three different versions, even including a rap version and a Michael Jackson tribute version. He also played music clips from the 'Sound of Music' (filmed in Salzburg) to get us in the mood.

On the way in, we managed to experience multiple weather conditions for our poor busdriver to negotiate; it went from overcast, to a little drizzle, to pissing down rain, to snowing (yes - you read correctly!) to sunny, back to the blasted rain! Four seasons indeed... But it was absolutely amazing driving through the snow covered fields and getting our first glimpse of the famous Austrian Alps.

Salzburg, our final taste of Austria, seems like a very interesting place, and we were both a little disappointed in hindsight that we were not able to stay there for a few days. The name of the place literally means "Salt Town", and was a very wealthy part of the world at one stage, as they mined salt there and before refrigeration, salt was more valuable than money, hence where the word 'salary' comes from.

Anywho, there are some really cool tours to do, you can go visit the underground salt mines (where apparently there is a lake, so full of salt with such clear water, that the boat on the top of the water, looks like its hanging in mid-air - we saw a picture and it looked awesome!), you can also see the underground ice caves, do a 'Sound of Music' tour and visit many sights from the movie, and finally visit Hitler's 'Eagles Nest' - his getaway/hideout, which is located inside a mountain (just like Dr Evil from the Austin Powers movies...)!

In total, our stop in Salzburg lasted a whole of 45mins, which definitely did not seem long enough. Even though we both despise the 'Sound of Music' (apparently the hostel in Salzburg shows it 3 times a day!), it would have been nice to be in Salz longer than a quick stop. Must make sure we go there next time....

Having said that, we have an interesting fact, that we learnt from our lovely tourguide, that we'd like to leave you with...

Apparently you can dissolve 3 times the lethal amount of salt in one litre of water - interesting huh!?!

Ps. We almost forgot, we stopped in Austria at a rest-stop, kind of like the equivalent of a fuel stop with crappy food back home, except the food here was awesome! In general, at these food stops, the food has been fascinating, fresh sandwiches, fresh hot food, juices, cakes, a bar, you name it. But this one really was superb. It had a guy making fresh potato pancakes with bacon and eggs and also a waffle bar, with the biggest fresh hot waffles we had ever seen, we decided to splash out and share one! Best waffle ever! Freshly made, smothered in heaps of golden syrup, strawberries, whipped cream and even shaved almonds would you believe?! We even had fellow travellers walk by and exclaim that they had 'food envy'... definitely worth the extra euros! Just shattered we'd left the camera on the bus.

Ok, signing off for real this time.

Love lots and lots,

the ever-expanding Chubby Bubbies,

Dani and Lewey.
