When we arrived in Venezuela we had decided to give Caracas a miss as we heard it didn´t have that much to offer. After meeting a German girl who works there we definitely didn´t want to go there. Apparently its a dangerous city. She spoke about slowing down rather than stopping at red lights and continuing if it was clear to avoid muggings or hijackings. From what I´ve heard, a bit like Johanesburg, South Africa. Not very appealing.

But we had to stay here to get our flight out to Peru tomorrow so off we went into the big bad world! We got a bus from Puerte Colombia to Caracas this morning and managed to negotiate the metro to a station close to a hotel we read about all the time on high alert for something out of place. When we were leaving the Metro station we stepped to one side to check our map when a very concerned lady approached and dramatically warned us about pickpockets and muggers. She even wanted to walk us to our hotel (It seems she was genuine) but we decided to go our own way. And without any trouble at all we arrived safe and sound. We even went out for dinner in the afternoon and felt reasonably safe. We have heard however that its a different situation at night so we´ve stocked up on beer and snacks to pass the evening quietly in our hotel room!

Venezuela is a stunningly beautiful country and our stay has been a good experience tempered by our lack of Spanish and the Lonely Planets complete inaccuracy when it comes to prices. Multiply everything by 2!!

As for the Spanish - we´re improving with the help of our new best friend, Michel Thomas and his audio lessons! We´re looking forward to meeting Dave McGuire and his cousin Elaine in Lima tomorrow night for a few beers before we take on the Amazon jungle and Ryanair´s version of the Inca trail!! (No hard feelings Dave!!)
