Where I stayed
We wanted to get out of the hotel early and get our sightseeing started but we had a rough night with Mitchell and his sore legs, so it was a late start around 10am. Yes, it was cold and rainy all day, but we had the super duper New York City Passes that Peter organised for us all and we were going to make the most of it. Besides we all have rain jackets anyway so off we went.
First stop was Madam Tussauds and bonus it was warm inside so we could dry off after our walk there. Lots of photos and 4 levels of famous people to photograph and decide who looked the most like they did in real life. Surprisingly I think PDiddy won that one, although no photo for him
After lots of photos it was off to the Intrepid Sea and Air Museum. It is acutally the USS Intrepid (aircraft carrier) that has been turned into a docked museum down at one of the Piers. We went through the USS Grommer submarine first which was very cramped but interesting then into the USS Intrepid. It was good for kids because you get to touch things and sit in things and the boys like planes etc so that was fun. The flight deck where most of the aircraft were, was out in the rain but we braved the rain and got some photos and looked at the all the aircraft that were once in use.
We decided to get a cab to the Empire State Building. It would have take us at least 40 mins to walk and by now the rain was heavier and unrelenting, so we had our first cab ride. All the porters on the ride up to the 86th floor kept warning us it was zero visibility up there but we didn't mind because there were NO LINES! On a sunny clear day you can wait literally hours in line to get to the top and we breezed through. Yes the view was less than perfect, but as the clouds parted from time to time in the wind, you could get a view of each side of the island to each of the rivers.
We stopped for lunch after the Empire State Building and got something warm to eat. Mitchell by now was very tired and cold, and needed to get back to the room for a hot bath and bed. I think he has caught the cold I have had since Plymouth.
A couple of movies later and Dad snuck out to get hot chocolates and cookies for us at the Starbucks across the road. A good, but wet and tiring day, lets hope tomorrow the rain lets off and we stay a bit drier.
