Crossed the border at San Diego into Tijuana. Took a bus to Los Vidrios, a 1 horse town, in an attempt to visit Parque Natural Pinacate. Hitched to the park but it was 26km through the desert with no traffic and 1.5l of water so turned around after 2 hrs. Hitched to Sonoyta and took a bus to Los Mochis. Took the apparently world famous train from Los Mochis to Creel through the Copper Canyon. After a day in and around Creel adventuring through the mountains, hitched to Basaseachi Falls - apparently the highest single-drop waterfall in N.America. Then took a bus to Chihuahua and another to Monterrey. Had a bad start in Monterrey but visited the awesome Grutas de Garcia caves and met a wonderful family - the Gonzales´ who showed me around more of Monterrey.
Bussed to Santiago to see the Cola de Caballo (Horsetail) waterfalls and then took a bus to Matehuala and a taxi to Real de Catorce. Climbed the sacred mountain near Real and met 2 really nice brothers and got a lift with them to San Luis Potosi. Then took a bus to Tampico and another to the very beautiful Catemaco (northernmost tropical rainforest in the world on a mineral water lake - very theraputic) where I chilled for a couple of days, desparately needing some R&R.
Then to Villahermosa to see Parque de la Venta with Mayan and Olmecan artefacts and Comalcalco ruins. Took a bus to Tuxtla Gutiérrez to visit the El Sumidero canyon on a boat. Wento to San Christobal de las Casas to see the caves and then took a bus to Palenque. Saw the ruins and some lovely waterfalls at Misol-Ha and Agua Azul. Then took an overnight bus to Merida. Arrived early morning in Merida and went to Chichén Itza ruins and then the Grutas de Balankanché caves. Went via Valladolid on the way to Playa del Carmen for some swimming in an underground cenote (well).
Did 2 dives off Cozumel on the Palancar and San Francisco reefs - very beautiful coral and fishlife. Then headed to Tulum and did another 2 dives the following day in the Dos Ojos caves - very cool when you are diving with a ceiling, but unnerving as I had a leaking O-ring on 1 tank... Took another bus to Chetumal and headed for the Belizian border.
