LA is a monster. It could eat you up; spit you out and it's clear that it's done that to many people already. Never seen so many daoine as a mheabhair in all my life..not even in NYC.
It's basically many cities in one massive suburb so a car is essential.
We stayed downtown the first night in the Cecil Hotel ($40dbl) which is quite near the Greyhound Station there. Downtown is seedy at night..although we had no problems. We got to 7/11 and back to the Hotel safely. The next day we hung out at Venice beach. One Loco talked to Michael the whole way on the bus (it's a long bus ride), and i mean talked non-stop. Grechy didn't have to say a word..he just nodded and gave the odd mumble back..just for the sake of it. The guy hopped out at the Liquor Store.
Nothing special about Venice beach itself. The shops there are bohemian and there's a freak show which i could have entered after i bought $5 sun glasses because i hadn't them on 5 minutes when a random guy turned to me and said 'Hey! You look like a bug!' Cheers.
We moved to a Hostel in Hollywood that evening and wondered whether we were doing the right thing as it was way more expensive for a Dorm.
No one wants to be Downtown - so it's cheap there. Everyone wants to be in Hollywood - so it's alot dearer. Doesn't take an Economist to work out the Maths.
It was full of young people trying to 'make it'. When i walked into the room, there was a skinny German guy dancing around with a camera filming him (he was filming himself, mind you) to music blaring from his laptop, i thought 'Welcome to Hollywood'. Later, he got Michael to hold the camera so he could get the footwork in. So funny!
The next day we hooked up with Michael's mate from Dublin Dave Hughes, DJ extraordinaire.
He drove us to a much nicer
beach down the coast called Hermosa (where we were told Ryan Seacrest was bitten on
the foot by a shark last week) where Dave's mates were hanging out. Really nice day. They brought us to a house they're renting. The roof has a view looking over the beach. Very impressive! We left there and headed back to Dave's for a BBQ and eventually said goodbye to him at about 11pm. A nice day hanging out with the locals who were great fun and gave us hilariously cynical insights into life in LA.
The next day, I took the tourist bus while Michael went shopping.
Tour bus wasn't great.
Saw where Brad Pitt stood dressed up as a chicken though..and then we knew it was definitely time to get out of there!
