We arrived in Cancun gagging for a decent meal. So, after we eventually found the hostel and checked in, we went for Mexican, after Cuba it was a very decent meal! We went to the bus station and got tickets for Tulum, which is a place on the coast about three hours south of Cancun.
So, the following morning we took the ADO bus to Tulum. We asked a taxi man to bring us to the hostel which we had checked into and he told us it wasn't by the beach, but that there was one by the same name at the beach. So, we told him to bring us to Posada del Sol - by the beach. When we pulled up Michael realised it had been the place he was emailing over the past week. The cheapest room they offered was 65 american dollars, so he had booked the other place (thinking it was by the sea), so we went to the desk and asked for a room. She said 130 looking out on the beach..when she saw our faces fall, she said there was another room above a shared bathroom for forty bucks but not looking out on the sea.
"We'll take it!"
So, we discovered where the French go on holidays-Tulum. You have to hand it to the French, they are on the ball. The area is ecological so everything is made of natural materials. Very beautiful. We spent the day on the beach which was about two minutes from our bedroom.
The following day we rented bikes and cycled to the Tulum ruins built by the Mayans and went for a swim at the beach there. We then tried to cycle to the next set of ruins but turned around because of the heat and went back to the beach. Later in the evening we went for another cycle to a UNESCO park where Michael jumped into a lagoon. Cycled 30km that day, wrecked after it.
Returned to Cancun the following afternoon and checked into the Weary Traveller Hostel. We decided to visit the Hotel area that evening and it was like we had stepped onto American soil. A big culture shock, big bars, restaurants, music pumping, tack, tack, more tack and many shops. We were wide eyed trying to take it all in and even more wide eyed with the price of food. Took the bus back into town still in a daze but ready for Miami where we were headed the following day.
