Where I stayed
Paraty Hostel Casa do Rio
. Hmmm. Nice restaurant, a treat perhaps for those travelling on a budget. We sapped the lads of every bit of information they had about South America over a few beers after dinner. They travelled the other way around and are now homeward bound. Got some great tips and advice. Thanks guys. Got home at 2.30am, just as the old town was coming to life. It was myself and Michael´s latest night out yet - wuhhoo - zzzz. Today we took a boat trip organised by the Hostel. Casa do Rio Hostel backs onto the river so, we just rolled out of bed, had breakfast and rolled onto the boat out the back! We went snorkling - although, i just swam. I refused to wear the mask - i didn´t want to see what was swimming below me. Growing up swimming in the Shannon - you dont know what lies beneath - and i think i prefer it like that. We went to a number of beaches, a lagoon and a restaurant for lunch. Lovely day, beautiful weather and great value. (10.30-5pm 20BrR). Just back now. Tonight, myself and Michael take an overnight bus to Sao Paulo from where we take a flight to Iguazo.
Took it easy in Paraty. Got a local bus to the village of Trindade yesterday morning (Fri) which is 40 mins down the road. Another memorable bus journey, driver was flying it (the one on the way back was even faster). Went to the beach there (which, yet again, involved a minor trek - in flip flops this time) and sat in the shade. Crispy Conneely is finding it very hot! Back to Paraty where Francis and Mairead (Paddy´s brother and his girlfriend - for those of you who know Paddy O´Brien) arrived at the hostel, after a long bus trip from Sao Paulo. They went for a nap, so myself and Grechy walked into the old town, which is really lovely. Paraty was a rich town during South America´s Gold Rush. Gold was shipped from the town to Rio and Portugal in the 1800´s. Today, the biggest industry is Tourism. The four of us went for dinner last night to a place recommended by Nicholas and Virginia, Sabor a Mar. You go up to a display of fresh fish on ice, choose your catch and the chef cooks it for you. We were eventually served (it seemed like an age!) a fabulous meal
