Sorry about being so late with this entry. I got back to Freiburg on Sunday (Oct. 16) afternoon, but have just now found time to write a bit about my travels in Northern Germany.
The first stop was Cologne on Sunday, Oct. 9, a city renowned for its impressive cathedral which is called the Koelner Dom. I met up with my second cousin there and he showed me around a bit. We walked along the Rhein and then enjoyed Koelsch (Koeln's beer) before heading to his home in Weiserswist, a small town about 30 km south of Cologne. I spent a pleasant evening at his place, visiting with him and his wife, and playing with their three really cute kids. In the morning, I was awoken by the afore mentioned cute kids who came gleefully knocking at my door relatively early in the morning to make sure I was ready to eat breakfast with them before they headed off to Kindergarten (which is actually like preschool here). Afterwards, I headed back to Cologne where I caught the train to Brunsbuettel to visit my Dad's cousin.
My stay in Brunsbuettel was lots of fun. The weather was surprisingly good - sunny and relatively warm. I went Wattwandern (walking out on the beach when the tide is out), cycling along the Elbe and visited Buesum. After having been in Berlin, Freiburg and then Cologne, Brunsbuettel was a nice, quiet change of pace.
The next installment of my Northern Germany trip will come soon - I hope!
