We'll get some proper words onto this page as soon as we can but for a bit of an overview  ........ salt mining started here during the middle ages and made Poland a very wealthy country. It seems to have been managed really well with the miners being well paid & looked after.
The mine goes down to a depth of more than 300 m & the tunnels & caverns extend for 300 kms. Everything is salt. The carvings were mostly done by the miners over the centuries. The colour comes from impurities in the salt.

This is well worth the effort to see. When we got there we were doing our "we're not tourists" thing and decided we didn't want a guide for the tour. So we said, to several different people, no, we'll go ourselves thanks, we don't want to join a group. After a while one of the very polite workers there said, "You join English Tour". We said, no, we'll be fine thanks. So he said, "Is starting right now" and firmly held the entrance door open for us. Then we realised, there's no way they're going to risk idiot tourists wandering around in such a vast complex unsupervised. So we shut up, joined the tour, had a great time and got a lot out of the guide's commentary.

Fantastic pics yet again guys!! There seems to be a lot of Polish people there! Any of them look like us Di??? Does dad's town still exist and if so are you heading there? I don't know how you guys find time for such fantastic prose and pictures being added to your blog when you should be sightseeing and making more new friends. Enjoy, enjoy. Bron xx

Family resemblances everywhere Bronia! We're heading for Czestochowa today which is the city near the town dad came from. We'll be there a couple of days so I'll be able to get plenty of photos & some video too.

I hope you wear a placard around your shoulders telling everyone who you are, to see if anyone stops you in the street to tell you they are related! Are you going to Auschwitz? Bron

I'm afraid I have to agree with Bron. Your work on this site is truly amazing given you're on holiday. I'd be struggling to even find an internet connection to check email...

Well stef my parents are for more computer savvy than you as they can achieve these things in mere minutes... Its barely a chink out of their holiday!
