Where I stayed
Hotel Europejski
Our hotel is right next door to Planty Krakowski, the big park which circles the Old Town and meets the river. It's a great place and the locals certainly use it. So much green, so much shade. Lots of paths leading in every direction.
The Old Town itself is quite gorgeous but its very heavily aimed at extracting maximum zloty from your wealthy tourist as painlessly as possible. We liked it a lot but after a while we decided to go to the less glam looking parts of Krakow just for some relief almost from the Theme Park Poland atmosphere. Although the history there is a bit difficult for Aussies to get our heads around. It goes back a very long way. There's a huge network of underground cellars which are now used by the restaurants and night clubs. Almost bigger underground than above.
There'll be a permanent exhibition of "Krakow under the Nazis" from this month. We think it will be in the Schindler factory. If it was open now we'd certainly visit it. A reminder that this part of the world has experienced true horror, still within living memory. A good reminder of how lucky (white) Australians are.
