Thousand Trails,
Soledad Canyon,
Acton, CA

This is my first entry to my travel journal which I am calling "Grand Tour USA."  To those I've specifically invited to read my musings, please feel free to make any comment or suggestion that comes your way.  For those who happen to stumble upon this site, the same applies.  Just keep it nice, please.

I thought I might start this journal a couple of days before I start my engines to give some background and list of characters to this trip.  I am Ed Wolford, a 64 year old retiree living in a Gulf Stream Sun Voyager 2004 class A motor home which I've dubbed Xanadu; with a first class 2 year old Russian Blue Cat by the name of Caleb, Czar of Xanadu and ruler of all the world.

I bought Xanadu about 2 1/2 years ago after I sold my bird ranch in San Diego County, CA.  I live in it full time, traveling where I wish, and staying where I wish.  Its a good life and I wish I'd started it years earlier.

My next door neighbors, Doug and Pat Black, in their very handsome Monaco Diplomat motor home will also be going on this Grand Tour USA.  So we'll be a two coach convoy.  They are accompanied by their two excellent cats, Blackie and Capsize.

It has long been my desire to see America, to see all the places  everyone else has talked about.  It's one of the reasons I bought Xanadu in the first place.  In broadest terms, we plan to saunter from California through Nevada, up through Utah and Idaho and into Yellowstone.  Then to S. Dakota, down to Wyoming across the middle states to Pennsylvania where Pat  has kith and kin and where we'll be staying for several months.  The coming back trip will take us through the southern tier states.  All in all, about a 7 or 8 or even 9 month trip.  We don't care which.

Let me say early on about Journal writing.  I have tried on a number of occasions to start and sustain a journal, each time I failed to keep it up.  No doubt this was due to my boring life at the time.  I hope this trip will prove a thoughtful  exception.  I will try to post at least once a week or more often if it seems appropriate.

We leave day after tomorrow, June 6,  in the morning and should be at the California-Nevada border eating a fine steak in the late afternoon.

Wish us well!
