Tourist food sucks! We wandered into town this evening for dinner and found a strip of restaurants catering for the tourists. They looked amazing and were packed so we thought – hey it can't be that bad, they have a set meal and the food looks fresh! Looks can be deceiving. For entree I had the Bouillabaisse – it was brown liquid that was salty and tasted like fish but had no evidence that they were even in the pot. My dining disaster continued with calamari that was served in a rich creamy yellow mayonnaise like sauce – which overpowered the dish and was too rich to enjoy. The only enjoyable aspect of the meal was the chocolate mousse.
Other than average food we had a fabulous day exploring roman ruins and monuments. We hit the road early and winded our way through the hills to Nimes to visit the colosseum. The colosseum was amazing and the accompanying audio guide definitely made you feel like you were attending a spectacular at the arena. We then headed up the road to Pont du Gard. The construction and engineering effort that went into this aqueduct was amazing. The museum provided an informative overview of the area and the importance of water for Roman cities.
Avignon is a beautiful city – the river, old papal palace and city walls make this place very endearing. We stayed at the Camping Bagatelle which was centrally located allowing us to explore wherever we wanted on foot, too made the facilities were pretty dirty and smelly!
