Taking the car, Kyle and I drove out to the Grand Canyon, passing through Sonora which is a beautiful city set into the backdrop of misty hills and mountains. We had to stop here and take pictures, it was just that breathtaking.  Unfortunately those pictures didn't turn out as it was still early morning and the sun was not in the right spot.  Also breathtaking was our brief stop just off the highway where we met up with a few other travellers taking in the sights. This small stop led us to a castle, seemingly built out of the side of a mountain. What a neat little site to find! We spent a couple of hours there, then continued on our way.  This place was free of charge to visit, and we grabbed a pamphlet on our way through the paths.  It was interesting to see how differently these 'hill people' lived, how they built their homes and obtained food for their families.  I felt a sort of emptiness upon finding out that for some reason or other they had been forced to leave their homes.

We didn't even take our first few pictures at the Canyon when my camera decided to break. So off we went into the city near the Canyon to buy a new one. At the same time, Kyle also purchased a book on the Canyon, siting over 500 deaths from falling. The one picture we had of the two of us together didn't turn out, but the nice gentlemen who offered to take our picture then went on to give us a little history lesson on the Canyon. His help was wonderful to have at a time when everything was new to us.  We spend about 15 minutes with him, thanked him and went on our way.  Quite frankly, I was mistified that there were not more railings set up along the paths.  It would be terrifyingly easy to slip right over the edge.

On the way back we stopped in at a Flintstone Park. Of course, it's closed up in February, but the lady working there allowed us in at a small expense and we had a time taking pictures and jumping in and out of the vehicles and houses. We walked away with two thermal coffee mugs and an assortment of other pricey artifacts, our fingers numb with cold but smiles plastered on for a good two hours afterwards.
