All Blacks play again this Saturday so decided I'd see if I could get close to Zurich to watch it with Niv. Looked like about 125kms from Freyburg to Lake Bodensee (Lake Konstantz to the Swiss).

I wasn't sure about the best route to get to the lake but the reception girl in the camping ground was enthusiatic and said she does it all the time, so I thought it can't be too bad. There were no real cycle paths per se for the first half of the ride, and predominantly uphill, but the Black Forest was pretty cool. It wasn't as black as I thought it was going to be. Maybe I just picked the wrong time of year... Of course the Black forest is famous for its Gataeu (I can't eat another one!!) cuckoo clocks, and all the Grim Brother fairy tales set in there. Didn't see any witches, wolves, or wicked step sisters, just a few dodgy looking elderly ramblers.

Lunch in Donaueshingen, the start of the Donau River which runs through to Budapest. There is also a nice cycle path which follows the Donau to its end so I thought I'd start following that (careful not to miss the turn off or I'll end up at my old work in Budapest!! ;)) I followed this for 40kms before I found the turn off to another cycle path, the Bodensee cyclepath which would take to me the lake.

By 5pm I'd had 120kms, and my first real day of constant up and down. Man, talk about exhausted. I started getting dizzy so thought I'd better stop and scoff some food. Half an hour later I was back on the bike but I still got tired and dizzy so searched for a hotel or something. Unfortunately it seems I was in a blind spot, so had no choice but to crack onwards. In my tired state, I actually ended up taking a wrong turn without realising it at the time but it led me straight to a camp ground. Phew! 147kms, longest so far and had a taster of the hills to come.

Next day I got back on track and it turned out I was only 5kms from the lake anyways! Since then I've started eating more regular on the bike (via the new meal I have invented called brunner. Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner, and I eat whatever I have in my bags!).

So Friday night I took a side trip from the lake down to Zurich for 36 hours to catch up with Niv, watch rugby and get some R&R. Unfortunately Niv thought R&R stood for Running and (d)Rinking so we went for a 90 minute run in the arvo then dRank for 12 hours.

Suffice to say when I got back on the bike the next day it was a tough session indeed!!

ps. And the AB's notch up another one over an understrength SAFA team... oh hold on, thats was our team...
