I am in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia aka Sabah, Borneo. Today I checked out the local market were I tasted the famous Durian Fruit aka the stinky fruit. It smells so bad the hotels/hostels won’t allow you to bring it in to the place. It is a spiky, yellowish-green fruit with a goey white flesh. When I first arrived to the market I could smell this stank that I assumed was garbage or the sewers near by. I first heard about this fruit from Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmerman on the Food or Discovery channel. He goes all over the world and tries different, crazy, nasty looking foods such as cheese with maggots or nearly hatched bird eggs. The episode when he was in Malaysia he tried Durain fruit and said it was one of the nastiest things he had ever tasted in all of the world and he almost threw up. The local Malay farmer got very offended. Anyways, after coming across it in the market I decided to give it a try. I bought 3 pieces that were already peeled for about $1.50 and went and sat down by the ocean. I grabbed the very slimy fruit, smelt what I thought was the sewer and took a bite. To my surprise it didn’t taste as horrible as I thought it would. It tasted like it smelt but not overpowering with a sweet aftertaste. I was shocked at the reaction of Andrew on TV because he made it out to be disgusting. Maybe for him it was the equivalent to what black licorice taste like for me. After one bite I was done and continued exploring the market
