Innsbruck, a beautiful old town entirely surrounded by mountains. Like many others, I was drawn here by its scenic landscape and selection of year-round alpine activities. I had an image in my head of locals wandering about in their traditional outfits. I saw myself sitting on a sunny streetside terrasse enjoying an apple streudel while taking in the magnificent view of the Alps in the background. And, of course, I was considering going downhill skiing and hiking!

The train ride from Munich was among the best and most scenic. Once in Austria, the train ran along the side of the mountain, through tunnels and over bridges perched hundreds of meters above the ground. The arial view of the villages and highways below gave way to oohs and ahhs from the passengers. It was absolutely spectacular!!

To my great disappointment, Innsbruck did not live up to be the picture-perfect city I had anticipated. The mountains hid behind thick fog. The locals in their costumes hid from the rain. I checked my bag then stood dumbfounded in the train station not knowing where to go or what to do. I approached a girl who seemed to be in the same situation. Her name was Maria and she lives in Mexico City. We ended up spending a rather uneventful day together.

I checked into the St. Nikolaus hostel. After dinner, I sat on my bed and talked to my roommates. Veronique was from the suburbs of Montreal and was very glad to be able to speak French with me. Cara and Allison were two loud Americans from Michigan who have Canadian boyfriends (something they shared within 30 seconds of meeting me). Blond Australian Kevin joined us in our room. There was nothing better to do than chat and hit the sack early.

PS: Happy birthday Mom! I couldnīt call home because the phone ate up my change even though I dialed a toll-free number.
