Where I stayed
Eventually we made it and what should have been a 30 minute trip took an hour, but at least we were going against the traffic which was at a standstill coming in, why i don't know as they weren't dressed for church, we guessed they were all heading for the beach.
We finally got to Pompeii and internet checks said the guidebook you get with your ticket is sufficient so we didn't buy a guidebook from the many touts who hang around, only to get in and find they had run out of the English version!
Never mind we wandered around and there were that many tours that we gleaned enough from what was being said by them
Pompeii itself evoked memories of Christchurch after the earthquakes and we wondered if that's what we should do with it. Leave it the way it is and make it a tourist attraction!
Luckily the day was overcast and not too hot as walking the cobbled streets would have been oppressive.
In typical Italian fashion a lot of what was supposed to be open was closed and yet you could wander through other parts quite freely walking on 2000 year old mosaics and touching the frescoes in the plaster, some almost as clear as when they had been painted, amazing.
The girls were a little awed by the two plaster cast figures of the bodies on display (showing part of a skull and foot bones on them) and of two skeleton's that were on display.
The whole site was really interesting and certainly gave a glimpse into what the daily life was like 2000 years ago.
After walking around for several hours and seeing our fill, and getting sick of the hordes of tourists that by now were everywhere, we headed back for the campground somewhat worried about the drive ahead.
Luckily the traffic and mad scooters were lacking and it was quite a pleasant drive, may be they were at Sunday lunch at Momma's!
Then it was catch up on emails and the blog while the girls went swimming again.
