Well it's now 5.13 am on Saturday, and Lyn and I are wide awake as the kids sleep on. Yesterday went really well, if a 22 hour travelling day can ever be said to go well, once we had discovered we couldn’t fit all our bags into the BMW! We ended up having to load them onto the bike carrier, which worked well. Maybe we need an estate! We were up at 4.45am, straight to terminal 5, and on the flight after everyone stocking up with make up, after shave and perfumes in Duty Free. (Everyone except for Cian!)

The flight was uneventful. Our first non Virgin flight for years, but BA was very similar. I managed to doze off a couple of times, and watched Hall Pass with Owen Wilson who is very cute! Lyn was in Premium Economy, so he could stretch out his long legs a bit more, although he did slum it and come and see us a few times.

Immigration the other end was a nightmare, taking us an hour to get through. This was mainly because we were the last people off the plane. Tegz had asked if she could take a photo of Pussell up in the cockpit, so they arranbged this for her after the flight! She was in her element, chatting to the pilots in the cockpit, while they took photos of her wearing a pilots jacket, and Pussell wearing a captians hat! What a girl! What a cat!! (Pussell has been on every holiday with us since our honeymoon!)

We then had to get the shuttle bus to our hire car. As ever Lyn went off to investigate where the bus went from, leaving us with all 5 large bags, rucksacks etc in the boiling heat. After about 20 minutes the right bus pulled in right by us.....with Lyn on board waving frantically! He’d got it to make a special stop right by the Evans’s!

Car hire did not go smoothly, as there was no pre ordered boring 7 seater minivan. Bummer! Intsead we had to make do with a free 300 upgrade to a 8 seater Ford Expedition V8 4x4. The very one Lyn wanted but decided we couldn’t justify the extra expense! Only 900 miles on the clock from new, and a guzzling 18 mpg. Fuel is $3.89 a gallon, and when Lyn started to do the maths on 4000 miles he quickly gave up!

Once we had all loaded up, we hit the busy Friday night Chicago traffic, where we crawled along. We had 192 miles to go till our first stop, a Holiday Inn in Madison, Wisconsin. We quickly passed the state line from Illinois to Wisconsin, without even buying a fridge magnet! The kids were all stretched out, and soon sleeping, waking only to get a McD’s, while Lyn and I had a Subway. We got to our hotel just after 8pm, and bullied the kids into the shower....then sleep. Our bed is lovely....and huge, while the kids have their own little wing with bunk beds!

It’s a bit annoying I’m awake at stupid o’clock now, but only to be expected as we’re 6 hours behind. Want to be at breakfast by 7am then hit the road again!
