To day is Fred's 66th b'day he was hoping to be celebrating it on route 66, but we won't be on that highway for another couple of days.  We were on the road by 9.30 am heading for the town of Bishop which is 6,400 feet above sea level.  The scenery is amazing, Mother Nature has created some weird and wonderful rock formations at times it felt surreal.  My camera has not been working well so I'm not very happy with my pictures.
We stopped for lunch at Lake Tenaya which reminded me of pictures I've seen of Canada.  The water was freezing but it was nice to have a paddle
We continued on through Sierra Nevada winding in and out the mountains and arrived at Bishop about 5pm.  A visit to the hot springs was planned, we all envisaged sitting around in hot tubs looking up at the mountains but it turned out to be a swimming pool that wasn't particularly warm and cost $10.  A few of us passed on that.
Some of the group went shopping to get groceries for dinner and whilst they were out they got Fred a birthday cake.  It looked like it had been decorated with icing made from nuclear waste, but it actually tasted pretty good.  One of our fellow campers bought across 2 trout that he had caught but didn't have enough room in the icebox to keep them.  They had been prepared and wrapped in foil ready to cook.  How nice was that!
Fred's birthday celebrations were a little bit on the loud side, one of our neighbours came across and asked us to keep the noise down at about 11pm, as we had got a bit raucous.  We had a really good night and every one went to bed slightly plastered and hoping not to have a hangover in the morning as we had to be up at 6am.
11/8/13  Death Valley
Surprisingly there were no casualties from last nights celebrations that's a good result as  we have a big driving day ahead of us.
We travelled through the Tioga Pass and at one point we were 10,000ft above sea level.  We had several stops in Death Valley, Mesquite Sand Dunes, Mono Lake which is a salt lake and as it's receding it leaves behind tufa's, very strange looking.  Badwater basin is in the badlands it is a salt plain and also happens to be 282 ft below sea level the lowest elevation point in Nth America.  Oh and did I mention it was very very very hot 46c plus.  Our Last stop before Vegas was Zabrisky Point, what a weird landscape.  We got to our hotel in Vegas about 7pm, just time to have a shower, have something to eat and then board the party bus that is going to take us to the Strip.

Pleased to hear Fred had a great birthday. I seem to remember a film called Zabrinsky Point - or did I?
