What I did
Biggest Hindu Temple in Sth India

I should imagine that the
pharmaceutical companies don't have a very big market for laxatives
in India!
Never in a million years did I
think, when beginning our blog at the start of our 39 day adventure in
India, that poo stories would feature so heavily!   If we're not
relating stories as to what's there out on the streets, it's stories
of what's happening in our private bathrooms!!!  It just never seems
to end – I lost another day on Monday – slept 24 hours and missed
Mamallapuram!  I suggested to Ginger that the way forward with this
'in one end and immediately out the other' conumdrum is to totally
miss out the middle man (or woman), - order the food then immediately
take the plate and flush it straight down the toilet!  Same price, same
conclusion - job's a good 'un.
Arrived in Chennii on Sunday after a 2
hour flight and met up with our new travelling companions at 4pm
We've got Gary & Linette from Oz and sisters Sandy & Zita
from Canada and our new guide is Santo. It's Santo's first Intrepid
trip and he's very nice but trying a bit too hard. He took us on a massive
'orientation walk' and we didn't get back to the hotel till about 5
hours later – we were all absolutely knackered!  Monday morning we
were up early again to get a private car at 6 for the 2 hour journey
to our next stop, Mamallapuram.  Can't report much about that place
as I spent most of the previous night in the bathroom - no details needed there - then pretty
much the following 24 hours asleep – that's what it does, it just
knocks you out totally!
Tuesday – fighting fit and up early
again, although not crack of dawn this time thankfully, to catch 8 am train for
an endless journey to Madurai. - 9 hours!  Had a very very brief (10
mins) orientation of the roads around our hotel and then went off to
eat.  An early night for all and a reasonable night's sleep although it's so
very hot and there's no air con, only a noisy fan whirring the warm
air around. There were a few power failures during the night and
then the generator suddenly kicked in and you almost jump out of your
skin with the noise of the fan suddenly cranking up. Then you're
startled again at dawn with the voice from the Hindu temple who
sounds like he's shouting at us from our bathroom!
The south is so much different from the
north, it's almost like being in a different country. It's very
clean for a start. The people have much darker skin and don't seem
to speak as much english – which makes every little thing we do so
very difficult. Ordering stuff in a cafe takes forever and you don't
necessarily get what you asked for. Then getting the bill is just as
difficult!  It's obviously nobody's fault and just a language barrier
thing, but so frustrating when you think you've explained what you
want and the person you're talking to is smiling and wobbling his
head – then he gets it wrong!  This morning, I was on my way
downstairs and someone asked if I wanted a cup of coffee. I thought
that would be nice and even nicer when I saw him go to the Memorable
Coffee Cafe across the road (just laughing cause had to ask Ginger
for the second time the name of the coffee!!! - obviously not that memorable!))  Anyway, he brought a
pot back, then brings a cup of really nice (memorable) coffee over to
me in reception.  When I went back up to my room, there's another
(cold) cup of coffee waiting for me there as well.   Did he think
maybe I was part of a set of twins or summat?
Went off to see a very elaborate temple
complex – the second largest Hindu temple in all Asia no less –
very impressive.  Not done much else today, we are off again on an
overnight train this evening. I am so very much looking forward to two
nights at a beach hotel.
