We were looking for some beach time and had heard some great things about the Similan Islands a park with only 2 places to stay on the 9 islands. Just north of Phuket we took a speedboat on rough seas for almost 2 hours. Quinn worked on his math on the way out - If there are 28 people on the boat and 14 are throwing up what fraction is that? The ride was worthwhile as these islands were very secluded (after the daytrippers left), gorgeous white sand beaches (from the coral), the snorkelling was fantastic and felt like you were swimming in an aquarium (ranked one of the top 10 dive sights in the world). We stayed in very economical tents just metres from the water for 2 nights, but it was hard to sleep with the dozens of sceaching bats overhead, so we moved into beautiful bungalows looking out over the ocean. One of the best things about travelling is how easy it is to meet other travellers and share our stories. We had great visits with a Swiss and a Swedish couple. We heard a story before we came about how no one was hurt during the Tsunami here because the chief was visited in his dreams by his dead son who warned him of the wall of water coming their way. We heard an even more remarkable story when we arrived - the manager of the park was watching CNN which warned of the Tsunami.
