We had a few days after safari in Arusha which we enjoyed. We met our first year long family travellers who happened to be from Vancouver - Heidi and Jordan, a mom and son team who had travelled overland from South Africa. We got talking and I mentioned that my wife was a travel writer. She said that she had bought her house in Vancouver from a travel writer... and of course the world being such a small place, it was Judi Lees' place - a great friend and mentor of Deb's.
One of my impressions of east Africa is how challenging it is to live here for the many living in the villages. The gathering of water and wood for cooking is a daily struggle here. In comparison my biggest challenge of the day at home is doing a 5 star So Duku.
We met a retired couple from California here that was distributing funds from their foundation for different projects. One of the things they were working on was trying to keep girls in school. Apparently many of the girls miss a week of school a month because their families can not afford sanitary napkins. They fall behind in class and they become discouraged when their marks suffer and drop our.
