We ran around Istanbul doing errands and I bought a leather jacket with the kids chanting for a lower price during the haggle. Walking through the markets there is a great amount of (as John Carroll would say) 'commission breath'. This year has not been kind to the merchants of Turkey. The Eurpeans stayed home to watch their soccer teams, there was a bird flu outbreak and the occassional bomb going off in a tourist region did not make for a strong tourist season. I was one of people we spoke with said "we live in a bad neighborhood". The country shares its border with Iraq and Syria.
Our month in Turkey had been great, but we were ready to leave and turn up the cultural knob a bit with our visit to Africa.
