Where I stayed
Aksum or Axum was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Axum. It was an important trading center and ruled the region from ca. 400 BC until the 10th century.
The kingdom of Aksum developed a distinctive architecture exemplified by giant
obelisks, which date from 5000-2000
BC. It also had it's own written language called Ge'ez. It is still used today as the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
Axum is the most holy city of the Orthodox Church in Ethiopia. It is an important destination of pilgrimages. The Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion is supposed to house the Biblical Arch of the Covenant with the tablet of Law of the Ten Commandments
Like Lalibela, Aksum belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A visit is definitely a must see.
