Returning to L.A. makes us feel that we've come full circle, since we were here just months ago and we leave for Colorado tomorrow.

Despite our desire to not like it here (because of the sprawl, the traffic, the pollution, etc.), both Todd and I instead find ourselves loving the casual, hip, relaxed California style. Once again my sister, Kim, and her boyfriend generously allow us to inhabit the entire living room of their apartment just 3 blocks from the beach. (Thanks, guys!) We went dancing at Rage, a gay club in West Hollywood, hit a couple of fun happy hours at Enterprise Fish Company and Schatzie's in Santa Monica, and drove waaaayy back into Topanga Canyon to visit my dharma friend Katie.

And in a sudden burst of exuberant spontaneity, my friend Michelle took me surfing! I have to admit that for the first half hour I was completely terrified. Convinced that some 20-foot-long monster with rows of sharp teeth was going to tear my leg off, I spent more than a few moments just lying on my board trying to keep any part of my body from touching the water. But once I started to relax, it was fantastic! A couple days later, the whole group of us headed back to the beach so Kim and Steve could try out their new surfboard and Todd could get out there for the first time. I was elated when I finally caught a wave and got up on the board! There really is something magical about watching the oncoming waves, feeling the surge and power of the water beneath your board, the sun on your face, and the feel of being frozen in time when the wave catches your board. Maybe we'll have to check out the surfing scene in Bali...

We're sad to leave California, but with just weeks to go before we leave for Southeast Asia, it's time to head back to Colorado.
