A lanky, leggy, orange scruffy-haired orangutan with pouty lips and probing eyes drops from the trees above and meets us on the boardwalk at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. She's quite the performer and all of us laugh when she stands on her hind legs, puts one hand on the top of her thigh, and points one of her toes with a disturbingly human come hither posture. She looks strong enough to snap us in two and she's only three feet away, easily within reach, so we giggle a bit while glancing for the nearest exit in case she means business. As it turns out she really just wants a big hug, loves people, and gets carried off like an oversized hairy baby when her caregiver sees how close she is to the group of us. For nearly an hour we watch as a band of orangutans hugs one another, plays together, takes care of a baby, put their arms over one another's shoulder like best buds, scratch their heads, nimbly peel and eat bananas, and carry on like a bunch of humans out for a picnic. Lots of fun to watch and a worthwhile visit!
