We're underwhelmed by Vientiane, but all the budget places are booked so we'll remember it for the nice hotel we stayed in! Wow - are those decorations on the wall??? Fancy!
Did a quick border run to Thailand to get new 30-day Laos visas, splurged for a nice French meal (steaks and even apple pie!), and topped off our short stay here with massages ($5 for two hours!). My dainty young masseuse looked so kind and gentle, then proceeded to gouge, stretch, and pulverize me with fingers of steel. I actually laughed out loud a few times to keep from screaming in pain. Though I felt like a cartoon character who'd been flattened by a steamroller, this was much needed physical therapy after lots of long travel on bumpy Laos roads!
Ok, then...on to the next place...
