D(eparture)-Day, May Day, wheels up, arrivederci Mill Valley. We have never written a travelogue, so we will work into this role of travel writer with some discomfort. We will try to be entertaining (depending on time we put pen to digital paper and how many cups of coffee we have had), but sometimes you are going to get just the facts. That's how it is going to be...the plain truth.

The Suburban has been given a clean bill of health after its trip from Hawaii on the container ship. We hope the Hawaii plates will be a conversation piece (especially up around Vermont-way) and will confuse locals and defuse conflicts in places like Lafayette, Louisiana (we're not Yankees, Brah. Mahalo). By the way, it is merely coincidental that today is the Bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase. The scope of our journey (at least on the spreadsheet) is south to Santa Monica, east to New Orleans, northeast to New Hampshire, west to Seattle and back home. A true circumnavigation. Oh, did we mention that Jocey and Izzy are coming along? They have no idea how their lives will change for the next five months...do WE?

We have packed the Suburban from stem to stern with every conceivable materiel needed for our assault (duct tape, we got it, play doh, check...). Our self contained supply chain would make Tommy Franks proud. Kirsten has a second career in logistics if so desired. We wanted to avoid a hard top carrier (Yakima or Thule) for security and parking reasons. I think we can still see out the back of the truck with everything in...so this is truly a packing feat.

We are pushing off at 9 AM. First stops: Santa Cruz Boardwalk and Monterey Bay aquarium. Gotta learn to crawl before you can walk...long journey begins with but one step and all of that. If you want to reach us on the road, email us at cshilakes@tmail.com or try our mobile 415-269-9057. Don't be shy, stay in touch, and pass along the website if you know of others that might be interested (Our travelogue is "ShilakesUSA2003" at the Travelpod.com website. See some of you soon and others when we return. Aloha
