Where I stayed
A Motel

Thursday, July 8, 2010

I am writing this letter from Des
Moines, Iowa. Everything is very different now that I have entered
the world of Philip K Dick's UBIK. When
I woke up in my motel room this morning, I met with my first
difficulty; my bathroom door required a nickel to open! Everything in
this world costs money, changing channels on the TV, opening the
fridge, even opening your front door. The corporation s have finally
figured it out, why sell a door that yields a one-time profit if you
can sell the service
of “door opening”. Also, there are certain people who have
developed the ability to see into the future. Called “precogs”
they are able to predict things that will happen well in advance. The
only disadvantage is that sometimes they can predict incorrectly,
which can have dire consequences.

After
I adjusted to the new environment, I was introduced to what is
perhaps the most wonderful part of this new world, life after death.
Granted, it is very limited. Apparently, when a person dies, they
have a certain amount of “afterlife” in them. As long as they are
kept connected to the afterlife machines, they can be brought back to
life by family members. Of course, the more often a person is brought
back, the shorter their afterlife is. So most people do it very
rarley, hoping to make their loved ones last as long as possible.
Unfortunately, nobody knows what happens after the afterlife runs
out, that is yet to be determined.

I haven't read this one by Philip K. Dick. Have you read the story that Bladerunner is from (something about Electric Sheep)? Very exciting travels, Chris.
