I am back in the United States now, living in Freemont California. I am a different person, however, and it will not be easy readjusting to my old life. When I escaped over the border from Afghanistan to Pakistan we were stopped by a Russian guard, and with no money left to bribe him I was forced to sell my passport and other papers. So upon returning to the United States I have become a refugee. I have no documentation to provide evidence of my old life, and so I have had to pretty much start over. The people here in Freemont are friendly, but they keep their distance and it is obvious that they see something different about me. I try to stay busy at community college, and I work at a flea market on the weekends. It is a small place, nothing like the vast markets back home with their endless booths and vendors chattering away. This place seems almost dead, sometimes with only seagulls to keep me company, I am lucky if I can make enough money for a week of food. There is never any gunfire though, and no ethnic killings or be-headings. My quiet life has allowed me to focus on other things, like writing which I have discovered a passion for. I have also met a girl whose name is Soraya. I am thinking of asking for her marriage, although I do not know what I would do for money. Anyway, someday I will return to Afghanistan, but for now I am happy and content with my simple life.

Good work, Chris.

Are you planning on reading "A Thousand Splended Suns" when you finish with "The Kite Runner"?
