I am still thanking my lucky stars ... and the Big Guy upstairs ... that I left Japan just one week before the big earthquake.

As for now,  I am in Guatemala.  I lived here for six months after college so it feels wonderful to be back.  The colors, architecture and people are just as beautiful as I remembered.  My plan was to stay in the colonial town of Antigua for a couple weeks and then move to a less developed city.  However, just like last time, I love it here too much to leave so soon.

Shortly after arriving, my parents came to visit for a week.  It was great to see them again and reconnect in person.  Indeed, their own lives have certainly helped inspire my journey.  I grew up listening to my momīs stories of exploring the world as a Pan Am flight attendant and dreamed of doing the same.  Moreover, my dadīs midlife career change taught me by example me that anything is possible through hard work and faith.

My main goal now is to learn Spanish.  In order to achieve this Iīm taking classes twice a day and living with a host family.  Compared to other countries Iīve recently traveled, there is something incredibly liberating about being able to read the newspaper, speak the language (or at least try) and connect with a wider variety of people.  Some days I really think I'm getting the hang of it and other days, I open my mouth and feel like a small child.  I just keep telling myself "poco a poco" - like everything in life, it is a process.

Crystal, Oh my goodness -- the timing with Japan. Oh my word. Praise God for your safety! I'm so happy for you that you had a visit from your parents!!! I feel better knowing that you're in S America...much closer to home! Thanks for the updates! Love, Cathy

Ah, Guatemala. I LOVED Antigua, too! Wish I could've spent more time there. It's fun to be able to imagine you in a city that I've seen first-hand (in addition to Bangkok, anyway!). Enjoy your time there to the fullest, and good luck with the Spanish! Love you lots! xoxoxo

Love the pictures - especially of your parents. I just had Ling Ling again this past weekend. She was a joy.
